Minamata Release Date, Cast, Plot, Trailer, and Reviews

Minamata is a 2021 drama film directed by Andrew Levitas, based on the book of the same name by Aileen Mioko Smith and Eugene Smith. The film stars Johnny Depp (who also produced) as Smith, an American Photographer who documented the effects of mercury poisoning on the citizens of Minamata, Kumamoto, Japan.

While the recent focus on Depp has come for all the wrong reasons in a libel case he pressed against the Rupert Murdoch British tabloid The Sun for calling him a “Wife beater”(a court ruling is expected Monday), this is a chance for the focus to swing back to his Chameleonic Screen Work.

In a drama inspired by a true story, Depp plays Eugene Smith, a famed Photojournalist who has disconnected from the world but takes a final assignment from his Life Magazine editor (Bill Nighy). He travels to the Japanese Coastal City of Minamata, where locals have been ravaged by Mercury Poisoning from chemicals dumped into the water by a factory.

He’s accompanied by a Japanese translator (Minami) and encouraged by a local villager (Hiroyuki Sanada) as he helps expose decades of gross negligence by the Chisso Corporation. Minamata also stars Jun Kunimura, Ryo Kase, Tadanobu Asano, and Akiko Iwase.

Minamata Trailer

“You cannot let your emotions run the show”. An official International Trailer has debuted for the true story Drama Minamata, made by an American filmmaker/ artist Andrew Levitas. The originally premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year and still doesn’t have a U.S release set yet. The film tells the story of the final days and the final work of famed war photographer W.

Eugene Smith, played by Johnny Depp. Smith travels back to Japan in the 70s where he embeds himself in a small town and documents the devastating effect of mercury poisoning in the coastal communities due to a greedy corporation dumping toxic chemicals and denying it. A powerful story about the impact of Photojournalism. I watched this at Berlinale and loved it, writing in my review: “There’s something wondrous and yet compellingly authentic about the film that pulled me into it”. Highly recommend the film.

Minamata Reviews

Some stories of real-life heroism beg to be told, while films like ‘Minamata’ fall victim to good intentions. Director Andrew Levitas’s mopey drama recounts War Photographer w. Eugene Smith’s seminal exposes of mercury poisoning in the eponymous Japanese fishing village, and certainly that 1972 photo essay deserves a feature-length salute.

However, it doesn’t benefit from a haggard Johnny Depp as Smith, growling through a half-hearted impersonation as the movie dials up the maudlin. Here and there, “Minamata,” tells a bracing story of corporate malfeasance and bracing advocacy for the underclass, but even the occasional poignant observations can’t salvage a movie trying this hard to tug every heartstring at its disposal.
