Then came a potential Mean Girls sequel. And now? We’ve got all the details from Netflix’s new original film, The Dog. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming release.

The Dig is based on the historical novel by John Preston which In turn based on a true story the film is a dramatization of the excavation in Sutton Hoo that led to a massive historical discovery.

It will have a limited theoretical run before it lands on the streaming giant in January, if you want to know more so read below.

 

 

The Dig – Starring on Netflix

Ralph Fiennes headlines the cast (currently lined up to feature in The King’s Man) as Basil Brown, the archeologist that makes the discovery.

Carey Mulligan plays Edith Pretty who was one of the first to be announced in the cast for the movie back in August 2019. Edith Pretty is the widow of the story.

Also starring in The Dig is Lily James (recently appearing in Rebecca for Netflix), Johnny Flynn, (Clouds of Sils Maria), Ken Scott (The Hobbit), Ben Chaplin (The Thin Red Line), and Monica Dolan (Eye in the Sky).

 

 

 

The Dig Release Date

The Dig will be released in select UK cinemas on Friday 15th January 2021. It will then be available to stream globally on Netflix from Friday 29th January 2021.

Adapted from the novel by John Preston, The Dig tells the story of the most famous archeological dig in modern British history- the discovery of the Anglo-Saxon burial ship at Sutton Hoo, known as “Britain’s Tutankhamun”.

Set in 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, the film deals with class tensions, love, and loss through the eyes of those affected by the dig and its treasures.

James is currently starring in another Netflix adaptation, Rebecca, alongside Armie Hammer.
